Entry requirements: Grade 5 in Maths GCSE

What is Core Maths?

Core Maths is intended for students who have passed GCSE Mathematics at grade 5 or better, but who have not chosen to study AS or A level Mathematics. It is usually studied alongside A levels or vocational courses. Core Maths is equal in size to an AS level qualification and graded A-E.

Why study Core Maths?

Studying Core Maths helps students develop their quantitative and problem-solving skills. It has been specifically designed with employers, universities and professional bodies to increase the employability of school leavers and apprentices.

What will I study?

Compulsory content – Analysis of data, Personal finance, Estimation and Critical analysis

Optional content – Option 2A Statistical techniques

How will I study?

Lessons will explore some new mathematical content but will also draw upon previous knowledge. Students will work individually and in groups and look at problem solving, critical thinking, analysing and interpreting data and communication.

How will my work be assessed?

Two exams, each 90 minutes, equal weighting: Paper 1 (Analysis of data, Personal finance and Estimation), Paper 2A (Statistical techniques)
